About me
Hi! I'm Lauren Petrie and I'm a recently graduated Animator and Illustrator based in the UK (but not tied to any particular area, yet).My time studying BA Animation (Hons) at The University of Portsmouth enriched my understanding of the production process as a whole and I especially took to 2D Animation, Visual Development and 3D Modelling/Animation roles in particular. I love learning this wonderful craft and will continue doing so for a long time. When I'm not creating things myself I love to keep up to date in the art world and see all of the innovation going on. Now that my time in education has come to an end I'm looking forward to getting more involved in the industry and attending more Animation Festivals soon. Thanks for stopping by! Feel free to contact me if you have any inquiries.

2D Animation
My 2024 Showreel
Please refresh this page if it shows as "unavailable"
Welcome to the 2D page! I've been practising 2D animation for 4 years so far. During my time at University I've had invaluable guidance from classically trained animator, Vincent Woodcock. His direction has had emphasis on the foundational principles of animation and equipped me with a nifty toolbox of tips and tricks for producing all sorts of movements and effects.
For cel animation I've used Procreate + Procreate Dreams, TV Paint, Sketchbook Pro and of course a good ol' traditional lightbox.
I love the freedom that this medium offers- the endless possibilities is what drives me the most to keep cultivating this skill.
I hope you enjoy what I have here so far and I look forward to adding to it over time as it continues to grow and evolve.
Selected Projects
What Fades Away
Independant 2D Animated Short (2023-24)
For my final year of university I have been working on this solo short film using mostly Procreate Dreams, DaVinci Resolve and Autodesk Maya. I have had full creative control over this project all the way through; from conceptualising and directing, to editing and sound design. The project is still ongoing and I will be showcasing it here when it's complete.
Sykdom
Collaborative 2D Animated Short (2022-23)
Collaborative Project with Nathan Hill, Elizabeth Fraser and D'vonti Phillips.
My role in the project had a primary focus on set design, background painting, concept development and 2D animation.
For this project I mostly used Procreate, Adobe Photoshop and Autodesk Maya.
Below are a selection of backgrounds, concept pieces and animation sequences I created for the film.
The story followed the brief of "Strange Encounters", following a young boy and his father through their quiet, communal village set in 14th Century Norway. We accompany them as they discover a menacing and mysterious arrival being made into their land, one which threatens the survival of their farmstead.

Illustration & Fine Art
Welcome to the illustration & fine art page! Here you'll find a collection of some of my more static art projects.
I've been drawing, painting and making things for personal and academic projects for upwards of a decade now. In that time I've explored many different mediums and techniques and still continue to do so, to keep things interesting. Here are some of my favourites!

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Concept Project (2024)
Earlier this year I challenged myself to create a concept for a mixed media film adaptation of the 2011 Ransom Rigg's novel 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children'. I remembered the book fondly for its unusual haunting and somber tone and wanted to try and capture that in its visuals.
I created an art book of the proposed concept, creating pieces in three stages of gouache paint, oil pastels and digital painting on Procreate.
In the novel, the peculiars live inside a
'time loop', where everyday plays out the same sequence of events as September 3rd 1940 and resets itself each night. It can only be entered and exited by peculiars through a cairn tucked away in the surrounding swamp land.
In my version, I added a new concept that during the day, the separation of the two worlds existing in the same space grows weaker, causing the them to progressively blur and blend into eachother.
Not only would it provide opportunity for really interesting imagery, it would also fill some plot holes. For instace, how Jacob and the peculiar children become aware of eachother, and why the place is riddled with "ghost" stories.
As Time Passes
Fine Art Project (2018-2019)
Mixed media project exploring the concept of our childhood experiences and how they can affect us in adulthood.
I used Adobe Photoshop for the painting and digital manipulation of images. These were then printed and developed using a variety of traditional methods including papercut, stitching dissolvable fabric, lino printing and printscreening.
My final piece was a 3D installation (below) filled with lots of different elements made to represent the web of memories collected across the course of a persons' life. A string of lights symbolises the neurological pathways that connect us to our histories and past selves. I really enjoy exploring topics like this; ones that unify us through the collective experiences we share by being human.

3D Animation
Welcome to the 3D page! Here you'll find a selection of some of my favourite 3D work and projects so far.
At University I learned the ropes from experienced 3D animators and gained proficiency in Autodesk Maya with modelling, animating, rigging etc. I've really enjoyed using 3D processes so far and use them as tools for all types of creative projects. Thanks for stopping by!
Selected Projects
Alfar
Collaborative 3D Animated Short (2022)
In 2022 I joined the team in producing a 3D animated trailer for 'Alfar', a folktale feature film concept. I primarily used Autodesk Maya and Adobe Photoshop for this project.
I designed and produced these additional 3D characters and props to match the style of the film. These were fully functional and ready for animation (rigged with controllers, etc).

In these three shots I was the animator and background compositor:

Mery's Moving Day
Independant 3D Character Animation Project (2023)
Series of 3 sequences following prompts from a selection we were provided to choose from. For this project I used a complex rig named 'Mery', available for free download online. Below are a few of my favourite moments. Software used: Autodesk Maya.
Elvira
Independant 3D Character Project (2021)
Created as part of a project to transform a storybook character into a 3D version, I based mine on this illustration by David Roberts for 'Cinderella, An Art Deco Fairytale'. Software used: Autodesk Maya, Procreate and Adobe Photoshop.
Above - Illustrations by David Roberts, used as inspiration for this project.
Elvira had a simple body rig that included a few changeable facial features using blendshapes.
I also made the additional assets for the sequence in Maya.
